COVID-19 Lockdown: Activities to Keep Your Kids and Yourself Busy

The coronavirus pandemic has definitely affected millions of lives across the globe. With families, including ours, staying in the safety of our homes and with our usual routines gone, you may be looking for ways how to keep yourself and your family productive during this lockdown.

While it is stressful to think about the uncertainties that lie ahead of us because of this pandemic, the best way to deal with our current situation is to make the most out of it. As for our family, we use this time to learn new things and create moments with each other. To give you a few ideas, I listed down some suggestions that you could do to keep yourself and the kids busy.

Activities Your Family Can Do On Lockdown

Learn Something New

What was the thing that you always wanted to do but didn’t get the chance to do it? This is the perfect opportunity to learn something new! There are thousands of free resources that you can find and use on the internet. Do you want to teach yourself how to bake or learn how to play the guitar?  All you have to do is to set a goal and challenge yourself. Our son Oscar, for example, learned the new skill of changing the tire, and we couldn’t be more proud of him!

Start a Garden

Spending time in the garden and nurturing plants is a wonderful stress reliever. The feeling of being one with nature, seeing the plants bloom, and enjoying the fresh air in the backyard definitely has its mental and physical benefits. Ask your kids to help you tend to your garden, they’ll surely love to play with dirt and pull out weeds.

Walk Around Your Neighbourhood

Try to maintain physical activity like walking around your area, if possible. My family found ourselves doing night walks around our neighbourhood—which looked totally different in the dark! The kids definitely enjoyed listening to night wildlife!

Launch a DIY Project

As our bee farm has blessed us with a plentiful supply of beeswax, our family enjoys creating homemade products out of this amazing by-product of our lovely bees. Our kids love making beeswax candles and food wraps, while I keep myself busy making DIY beauty and household products based on beeswax.

Give Your Kids Age-Appropriate Housework

Trying to run the household with your kids being at home the whole day could be exhausting. So instead of doing it all yourself, you can assign your children some-age appropriate chores. This gives them a sense of responsibility and a chance for them to develop critical life skills.

In our household, the kids look after the pets and they also help cook meals. We try to follow a daily routine as a family that includes doing chores, which also help us work around their online home school schedule.

Most Importantly…Have Some Fun Family Time!

The pandemic has indeed taken away a lot of activities that we enjoy, but it has also given us the wonderful opportunity to spend more precious time with our loved ones. Some fun things that we do as a family are playing board games and other silly games, like doing each other’s make-up while blindfolded—we sure did get a lot of laughs from this game!
